Glucosamine Facts

The Reality, the Myths
and Marketing Hype

Did you know that there are different types of Glucosamine?
... and how they act, react, and respond differently within a body.

The number of products claiming to help joint pain has grown rapidly over the last 30 years.

Thousands of choices, millions of lies. You can't avoid the array of advertisements claiming that this product or that one is some 'magic bullet' or 'miracle cure' or will 'eliminate joint problems' or 'cure arthritis,' or 'be a liquid joint replacement.' The media is filled with some paid celebrity reading a well crafted script, trying to convience you to buy some supplement; often a product they've never actually used outside that studio, and dang sure didn't spend their own money on. When you dig deep into the science, you'll usually see that the claims in their script are contrary to science. But hey, they earned a pay check... right?

Take a moment to step back and think, to ask questions, and do a little research. The principles of nutrition are backed by science, third party unbiased studies, and are true for people... and our pets!

The basics aren't magic, or some secret.

It doesn't have to be just a band-aide, or a temporary symptom masker.

Understand that marketing and advertising claims of "It Works"
can have two very different - and often opposed - meanings:

  1. Masks the problems, covers the symptoms, and blocks the pain. This is the most common type, especially on store shelves. The reality is that all oral supplements offering a 'quick fix' are using ingredients (usually herbs: plant derived drugs) that may effectively mask, cover, or block the symptoms. While they can help with the pain, they ultimately allow the body to continue getting worse, and often causing further injury or problems. Next most importantly, because they are completely unregulated (other than claims), their POTENCY, CONCENTRATION, and CONSISTENCY very from manufacturer to manufacturer, year to year, batch to batch, and even lot to lot. The other option:
  2. Promotes actual healing, by supplying the body the building blocks necessary to help the body heal itself (when possible), in forms it can readily use, which is the best long term option.

This second option is not the 'quick fix.'

It does not eliminate the pain or suffering in hours or even days, but has repeatedly proven more effective IN TIME (average 3 to 8 weeks)... as healing occurs. (It can also help speed the recovery process)

Glucosamine Suphate 2KCl is far better for the body. (Hint: if you're in pain, use pain killers, as prescribed, as necessary, but never every day for prolonged periods of time!)

Next, it's important to understand that drugs, including their plant derived counter parts that offer 'drug activity' (medicinal herbs) can be beneficial (in the correct dose, with the correct usage), from a responsible manufacturer, for a while.

Medicinal herbs, as with most drugs, are seldom prescribed for daily prolonged use by professionals, because they result in 'the RANTS.'
(one or more of the following):

MDsChoice.com
  • R - Resistance or immunity (you need more and more to accomplish the same thing).
  • A - Addiction.
  • N - Negative interaction with other drugs ... or treatment processes.
  • T - Toxic effect, build up, or overdose (often slowly impacting the liver or kidneys, even the heart and brain, over months or years).
  • S - Serious Side Effects.

For these reasons herbs do not belong in any daily supplementation intended for prolonged use! Company’s that deal with products containing medicinal herbs should communicate proper safe use, but very few do.

Their warnings should include all known side effects, any valid concerns, and all potential dangers if misused or overused. There should also be a list of what ORGANS and parts of the body are effected, as well as all known (or reasonably suspected) dangerous interactions with other medications or treatments.

Medicinal Herbs ARE NOT NATURAL TO THE BODY or diet.

Some herbs really are MEDICINE (DRUGS) and should be used with the same type of awareness and caution as would be expected of any 'drugs;' no more than 7 to 30 days without at least 10 to 30+ days off, or as specifed by DOCTORS ORDERS!

People really need to understand, and remember:

Sadly, most companies selling those herbal products don't list ANY warnings, cautions, or contra-indications. Simply claiming 'it's all natural,' thereby impling 'it's all safe.'

It's irresponsible to try to avoid the real dangers, known issues, and contraindications. Many consumers regularly misuse herbal products, which can absolutely create problems and even life threatening dangers. The fact some herbal supplement companies don't have what they claim on the label of their product, or have caused a false sense of security, are also why some groups have been pushing for more regulation of dietary supplements.

More sadly, the vast majority of herbs have little to nothing to do with 'diet' and despite the cliams of companies selling products containing those claims and questionable practices,  "Diet" involves NUTRIENTS - vitamins and minerals, enzymes, and amino acids... NOT HERBS! The 'cooking type' are SPICES (for flavor & taste), it's the MEDICIAL TYPE that impact a system or portion of the body in a particular fasion. Even when positive, there are nearly aways LIMITS or the RANTS will kick in!

  1. Just because things are "natural" doesn't mean that they are good, safe, or natural to the body...
  2. Just because something is 'made in nature' doesn't mean it should be used daily, or for prolonged periods of time.
  3. Or that they will remain 'good' when over used, misused, or abused.

The GAIT Study

The Glucosamine/chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial (GAIT) was a large, randomized, placebo-controlled trial conducted at several sites across the United States. ~ the study investigated whether glucosamine and/or chondroitin could treat the pain of knee osteoarthritis.

Don't get confused, as the HCL version is absolutely NOT THE SAME... and the science was actually known in the 90's!

Glucosamine Sulphate

Science has proven this form actually works... time and time again, for nearly 50 years, in the right way, a safe way, and in an effective way the body can actually benefit from, and really uses.

Pain naturally goes away as healing occurs. Although it is NOT a 'pain killer' or masking agent, Glucosamine Sulphate 2KCl CAN HELP REDUCE PAIN, increasing flexibility and mobility... usually within 3 to 8 weeks.

Glucosamine HCl requires a sulpher source to actually be used anywhere within a body; which is why you nearly always see it mixed with a Chondroitin Sulphate. Over 50% of the best glucosamine hcl hits the poop, unused, in less than 24 hours. Of that that remains, only a fraction might make it to the joint tissue, IF there is an addequate sulpher source (and the system can 'remanufacture' glucosamine sulphate within the digestive tract)

The companies using that combo either doesn't understand the science (and ignored the GAIT Study) or they have some magic herbs to mask the symptoms, giving some illusion of effectiveness by blocking pain (but not helping solve any problem).

The reality of the GAIT study should help educate every consumer about just how dishonest some companies (and celebrities paid to endorse those companies pushing the HCL form, or products riddled with masking agents and pain killers) rally are!

There are two types of Glucosamine Sulphate - NACl (sodium) & 2KCl (potasium). Both will make it into the blood stream without problem. Both will make it to the joint tissue. However, nearly every body is already potasium deficient, and therefore that form is usually more highly absorbed, and more actually used by cells that use (and need) glucosamine within the body.

Sulpher is a necessary componet of cells. Potasium is necessary to mammals bodies. Glucosamine is required by all joint tissue, and soft tissues within the body. These are nutrients the body wants, in forms it can actually use, without any 'conversions' or hope.

Up to 98% of the quality GS-2KCl form can be in the bloodstream within 30 to 45 minutes, and available to the joint tissue within 4 to 6 hours. However it is NOT a 'guick fix,' and usually takes 4 to 8 weeks for results to honestly be noticed in knees, hips, and shoulders (longer for spinal issues).

Personal Testimony ~ from Terry Mercer: Despite having wrist, elbow, and knee surgery prior to meeting the doctors, before the company was started in 1995. I was fast growing, 6 foot tall in grade school, six six and a half when I graduated high-school. I was tall, skinny, and yes, even a bit uncoordinated for many years. Consequently, from age 5 to about 40 I averaged at least one broken bone per year minimum (some years more, some accidents involved more than one broken bone, sprained joints, or twisted limbs). Evil Knievel and Zorro were two of my hero's growing up. I was a bit clumsy, until I was in my late teens; then I became a bit of an adrenaline junkie (now mostly retired now, at nearly 60 years old).

I was a service project away from Eagle Scout, with every merit badge that existed at that time. I enjoyed exploring, challenging myself, learning, and doing a variety of things, like, skating, bicycling, skiing, kayaking, scuba diving, bungee jumping; zip lines, coasters; sling shots, climbing, as well as assorted sports activities. I often pushed my limits, doing things most people wouldn't try.

Over the last 40 years, I've had motorcycles jumping over me, horses stampeded directly at, and past me, while photographing them. I've been within a 'stones throw' of assorted wild animals, often with nothing but a camera in hand. I've been over 90mph on the water, nearly 150 on a motorcycle, nearly 200 in a car.  I loved pushing the limits, and have been around a wide variety of unique situations over the years. However, occasionally I over estimated my ability (or the situation), or miscalculated, and consequently got hurt.

Arthrosamine capsules ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ rating, is a premiere joint supplement by MD's Choice. That product has easily gave me over 20 years of joint health back! I'm a firm believer in the benefits this product has to offer. I faithfully use it every day! Enough that I moved from S. Oregon to E. Tennessee specifically to help the founding doctors, and later became the President of that company. A couple years ago I fell through a deck (really, I wasn't even goofing off). The doctors were amazed at how great my joints looked, despite my age, size, and history of past injuries. ~ Terry Mercer, Computers; Cameras; Web Development; and President, MD's Choice.

Natural isn’t always “safe” or necessarily any better than the synthetic versions.

Both are concepts of scientific reality that are contrary to a lot of companies' marketing material, and what a number of seemingly good people will attempt to tell you. They either don't know any better, or are like that proverbial old west 'snake oil salesman' that just doesn't care what the truth really is, so long as they can make a buck (or 50) from you.

The reality is that negative effects may take days, weeks, months, and sometimes even years. A lot depends on just exactly what might be causing the negative, as well as the individual body, the quantity taken, a person's diet and exercise routine. It is also important if any drugs, or other supplements are being used, quality of the ingredients ingested, and the specific drugs and herbs used... as well as, where it came from, and how it was sourced, produced, and processed.
The one thing that is certain is that every single drug in existence whether "natural" or synthetic... DRUGS will eventually cause one or more of the above five problems (RANTS) if they are overused, misused, or abused, and even when used daily for more than a few days at a time. Even Echinacea, which is considered by some to be one of the best 'natural' immune system boosters available from nature, is recommended at no more than 3 weeks (21 days) on... and at least 10 days off... or the body WILL BECOME IMMUNE!

The use of some medicinal herbs commonly sold on store shelves can even prove to be life-threatening.

For example, a person taking a regular dose of just ten milligrams of gingko biloba, or many other 'herbs' can NOT undergo certain major surgeries because they could bleed to death!

(God help them if they were also taking some type of blood thinner, or blood pressure medicine at the same time).

Turmeric is another amazing 'medicinal herb' according to some of the science over the last decade, especially when combined with curcumin and black pepper... BUT it is a blood thinner, and too much really can hurt you (or your pet, that can’t tell you they are having a problem). It should be used wisely.
